Liberty wins 2011 RathNet Race
1st Place: Liberty
2nd Place: Nice Aft
3rd Place: Drifter
The 2011 Rathnet Races were held May 28 and 29 under a mixture of light rain, thunder in the distance, and winds from 5 to 20 kts. These conditions, plus a combination of around-the-buoy and long distance races, made for a challenging competition that did not favor any one boat or crew.
The race on Saturday around the buoys was sailed in light and shifty winds. A planned start to windward became an off-wind start during the starting sequence that was handled well by all competitors. A shortened race with a finish to windward was won by Nice Aft, with Liberty and Orion finishing within five minutes on corrected time.
Sunday's race was sailed in heavier winds, with a gust or two reaching 22 kts. All crews got off to a good start with no boat having a clear advantage on the downwind leg at least to Ranger Point. The return upwind from the Southfork Buoy favored the larger boats as Nice Aft led the group to the finish line. But a favorable tack across the main basin on starboard by Liberty made all the difference as she finished first on corrected time, followed by Drifter and Nice Aft. Only about three minutes separated the 1st and 3rd finishers in a race that lasted well over 2 hours.
The 1st and 2nd place finishes by Liberty made her the overall winner for the 2011 Rathnet races. A very honorably mention goes to Mike Miller who joined the Club just prior to the Regatta. Orion may well be boat to contend with in the future.
